Launch party and book signing for The Healer's Apprentice - Date September 4

A new novel for young adults, The Healer's Apprentice, will be releasing nationwide and the official launch party is at the LifeWay Christian Store in Huntsville on University Drive on Sat., Sept. 4th from 12 noon until 2 p.m. The author, Melanie Dickerson, will be signing copies of her book. This novel will appeal to teens and young adults who like teen romance, but it is a wholesome, Christian choice among a lot of dark novels that are aimed at our teens.

Ider Mule Day - Date September 6

The event kicks off with the Wheels of Time Cruisers Open Car Show at 8 a.m. A parade featuring mules, horses, carriages, antique cars and tractors take to the streets at 9:30 a.m. Tests of strength follow with a mule pull at 10:30 a.m. and a draft horse pull at 1 p.m., and in between the fierce pulling competitions is the mule and draft horse show beginning at 11 a.m.  The day-long event also offers an antique engine and tractor display, an antique tractor pull, arts and crafts, and games for children. Live entertainment featuring bluegrass and gospel singing fills the air from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and plenty of barbeque and other food vendors along with Ider Rescue Squad’s famous homemade ice cream will be available.  Admission is $2 per person and children under 6 years old are admitted free. All activities are held in and around Ider Town Park located off of Highway 75 at 183 Sweet Gum Road.

A Few Good Men - Date September 10

Theatre Huntsville opens its 2010-2011 season with Aaron Sorkin’s Broadway hit, “A Few Good Men.”  This is TH’s fourteenth season since the merger of Huntsville Little Theatre and Twickenham Repertory Company in 1997.   “A Few Good Men” tells the story two Marines on trial for complicity in the death of a fellow Marine at Guantanamo Bay.  Navy Lawyer, Daniel Kaffee, a callow young man more interested in softball games than the case, expects a plea bargain and a cover-up of the facts.  Prodded by the only female member of the defense team, he eventually makes a valiant effort to defend his clients, and in doing so, puts the military and the Marine code of honor on trial.   Leslie Bofill directs. Performances are September 10 and 11, and 16-18 at 7:30pm, and September 12 and 18 at 2:00pm at the Von Braun Center Playhouse.  Ticket information is available by calling 256-536-0807.  Prices are $17 for adults and $15 for students, seniors 65+, and active duty military.  Special group rates are available.

5th Annual Art on the Square Art Fest - Date September 11

        Thousands attend this juried fine art festival in downtown Athens. Over 55 artists will exhibit and sell their creations under the trees around the Courthouse. A professional Irish Step dancing troupe will perform two shows during the festival, plus a singer song writer from Nashville, lots of local entertainers, and a public drum circle as well as a massive collaborative art piece for attendees to help create. Boom Days Heritage Celebration - Date September 18

The City Park Art Show showcasing some of the South’s finest artists takes center stage at the fourth annual event.   New activities have been added to this year’s celebration. A Texas chuck wagon will be on display to show how cowboys once lived and Civil War re-enactments will take place in City Park throughout the day. Live music from four stages fills the air in the downtown area. Set to perform at this year’s event include up and coming country rockers Blackberry Smoke, Rock Candy Band plus many more. Southern Traditions - A Holiday Market Place - Date November 6

Madison Academy's 37th annual Southern Tradition will be held November 6th, from 9am to 3pm.  This is a school fundraiser is sponsored by the Ladies Association of Madison Academy (LAMA), to which everyone is invited and the admission is free.   The main event is the transformation of the school gymnatorium into a furniture showroom and gift boutique with a host of unique items to kick off the holiday shopping season. The most notable items are the unwanted and discarded furniture that talented volunteers have distressed and refurbished, creating one-of-a-kind treasures. You have to get there early and bring a truck (or trailer) because these items are always the first to go!  Other items include, but are not limited to unique furniture, home decorations, a silent auction and a giant bake sale with mouth watering desserts and variety of breads, etc.  While there, you can visit the "From Cotton to Countdown Cafe" which is named after the very popular cookbook published by the LAMA.  You can enjoy home cooked fare such as beans and cornbread, pulled barbecue sandwiches or fresh coffee and homemade dessert.   Finally, the entire varsity basketball gymnasium is transformed into a carnival to entertain all ages: multiple blow-up slides, a baseball pitching booth, hair and make-up booths, cotton candy and many other booths and attractions. For more information, you can call 256-971-1620.
